A Dutch mahogany musical longcase clock with quarter chime
The movement by J. Huygens, Amsterdam, third quarter 18th Century
The case with canted, hollowed angles, the bombé plinth on hairy claw-and-ball feet, the arched rectangular trunk door centred by a shaped rectangular lenticle (lacking glass) with a bronze mount with Europe and the bull, the arched hood centred by floral carving, foliate soundfrets to the fronts and sides, the caddy-top surmounted by later figural finials (the figure of Atlas lacking), the glazed arched door flanked by pilasters headed by Corinthean capitals, the brass dial painted with a market scene depicting various figures, surmounted by the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter-ring signed J:Huygens/Amsteldam, the matted and engraved centre with rolling moonphase and date aperture, the movement with anchor escapement and Dutch strike on two bells, with Dutch music playing, on two rows of bells, the music on ten bells via fifteen hammers and eleven bells via twelve hammers, the case late 18th Century and adapted to fit the movement
