Lot Essay

The sitter was Governor-General of the V.O.C. from 1632 to 1636. The present lot is a copy after the picture, on panel, 33 x 25 cm., in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (P.J.J. van Thiel, All the Paintings, etc., 1976, p.713, no. A4531). The prototype follows the picture, on panel, 97.5 x 78.5 cm., by an anonymous Dutch painter in Batavia, mid seventeenth Century. This panel was excecuted for a series, containing sixty-five portraits of Governor-Generals (P.J.J. van Thiel, op.cit., p.713, no. A3761).
