Lot Essay
The canapé of the present suite is based on the model by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené, previously in the collections of Mrs. Anna Thomson Dodge, Rose Terrace.
The highly unusual design of this canapé reflects the influence of the designs of Richard Lalonde and Jean Delafosse (1734-1791). Lalonde's design form the 1760s for un confident orné de sculptures included in the Vème cahier d'ameublements dessinés par La Londe has the same overall form with similar urn finials. Another pen-and-ink drawing of a wall arrangement by Lalonde (in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, circa 1780) shows a canapé à confidents of related design. Delafosse's designs, first published in 1768 in Nouvelle iconologie Historique, include a number of canapés with Antique urn finials.
