Born in Paris in 1848, Louis Robert Carrier-Belleuse (d.1913) studied sculpture under his father Albert Ernest, and painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Cabanel and Boulanger. He worked initially as a painter, exhibiting at the Salon from 1870 onwards, but turned to sculpture in 1889 and continued to work in this medium until his death. Like his father, he worked as a modeller for porcelain, and was artistic director of the Choisy le Roi factory.
