Lot Essay

The sketches were taken at Regentville, near Penrith, New South Wales, 28 and 29 November 1819.

View of Sir John Jamison's first Regentville homestead, at the centre of one of the finest rural properties of the time. Pellion, accompanied by the naturalists Quoy and Gaudichaud, had left Sydney the day before on their expedition to the Blue Mountains. The naturalists are seen in the foreground of the drawing, accompanied by William Lawson, the explorer and pastoralist, who had crossed the mountains with Blaxland and whom Macquarie had asked to act as guide to the French officers. For the boating excursion on the Nepean opposite Jamison's estate see Freycinet, II, ii, pp.638-639.
