Well carved with the god seated on a pedestal in virasana, the heroic posture, his right leg resting on a crouching spirit and his left gracefully crossed, a flame and cobra in his uppermost hands and with his lower right hand in the gesture of elucidation, his face with a benign expression and hair matted in an elaborate chignon

As Dakshinamurti, Shiva is the supreme teacher, teacher of yoga, music, as well as the arts and sciences. His right leg rests on the dwarf Apasmara Purusha, symbolizing ignorance.
