Lot Essay

Brass Shivalinga of this type, where the entire shaft is conceived as a head in the round rather than projecting from the side, and where Shiva appears with a turban and moustache, rather than an ascetic, are characteristic for Maharashtra; for a smaller example in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, see P.
