Tibet, Bon, 14th Century
One carved with ten individualized stupas joined by banners on a black ground and framed by a red border and inscribed underneath each stupa: 1. illegible 2. pad spung (heap of lotuses) 3. byan rlabs (blessing) 4. rnam dag (complete purity) 5. byang chen (great melody) 6. bdud 'dul (subduing demons) 7. sgo mangs (many doors) 8. myang 'das (enlightenment) 9. ra ban sums 10. nyer zhi; the other in similar colors depicting various mandala, shrines and multi-directional figures and inscribed underneath: 1. 'phrul gyi mi (magical men) 2. rta rkyang (horse, wild ass) 3. sgo sbag (door) 4. dkyil 'kor (mandala) 5. cham ris 6. slang cog 7. khang rkyang (horse, wild ass) 8. rta cha bzhi (four sectioned horse); both covers with remains of polychrome painted scrollwork on reverse
