Lot Essay

Mukherjee's preoccupation with landscapes and everyday rural life was tempered by a unique sense of distance, which enabled him to incorporate Indian and international influences in the evolution of his style. His visit to Japan in 1936 was particularly important to his development, as this piece with its lyrical use of color, evocative of screen painting, shows.
