FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, one of 12 copies specially bound for Creasey. This copy inscribed and signed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Dennis Wheatley, in sincere appreciation...for the golden opinion you expressed of this book even in its first manuscript form. Very sincerely, Anthony Morton January 15th 1937". Dennis Wheatley was one of the judges who awarded this book the £1500 "Cracksman" Competition prize; Wheatley was also provided an ironic one-page inscription on the verso of the half-title regarding how the book came to be chosen: "...the best, by a long way, out of a really rotten lot.." Laid in are two TLS from Creasey to Wheatley, 21 May 1936 and 28 January 1937 concerning Creasey's writing. The first in the Baron series, featuring John Mannering as the antiques dealer and jewel thief.
