The box with deep rounded sides finely carved as overlapping petals rising from the flat base, the cover carved to imitate the seed pod with the movable seeds held within circular recesses, the exterior of the box of russet color
2 5/8in. (6.7cm.) diam., green-stained reticulated bone stand

Lot Essay

Ingeniously carved small boxes such as these might have been used for seal paste for the scholar's table. A very similar ivory box was included in the exhibition, Splendour of the Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 9 June-2 August 1992, no. 273.
