A PAIR OF COCONUT SHELL BRUSHPOTS, BITONG
Late 18th century
Each of squat cylindrical form composed of rings of coconut shell freely carved in relief with scenes of bamboo, plum blossoms, and birds or pavilions against a mountainous background, the interior and bottom of the foot covered with pewter, forming a thick band top and bottom; together with a small coconut shell cup lined in silver, carved in relief with a landscape scene with pine, willow, and rockwork along a riverbank, and with an inscription in relief reading, 'Alone, I recite the poem after completing the composition. Signed: Xianzi ('Immortal')'
