The bulbous, tapering ovoid body surmounted by a trumpet neck rising to a rolled rim, covered with a lustrous black glaze splashed in russet with 'partridge feather mottles' falling in an irregular line above the spreading pedestal foot to expose the pale grey body

While the distinctive shape of this vase is well known in Cizhou wares, black-glazed examples are very rare, especially those accented with russet splashes, and no other comparable vase appears to have been published.
