Lot Essay

Compare the virtually identical Wanli-marked jar and cover in the Percival David Foundation illustrated by R. Scott in Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration, London, 1992, p. 91, no. 92. See, also, the Wanli-marked jar of this shape, but decorated with dragons and its domed cover with petaled rim, in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, illustrated in Blue-and-White Ware of the Ming Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1963, pl. 6 and 6a-c.
