Each finely enamelled in mirror image with a scene of Zhonggui placing a flower in his sister's hair, set in an elaborately decorated interior containing a large display shelf and stands of gnarled wood supporting flower-laden jardinières, the reverse with a fourteen-character poem alluding to the scene, all between various decorative borders, the waisted neck with a dense lotus scroll set against a lemon-yellow ground containing bats, shou characters and pomegranates, the interior and base glazed turquoise, each base with Qianlong four-character mark in blue enamel and a museum accession number in red, L35.1.123 and L35.1.124

Lot Essay

According to legend, Zhonggui, the Demon Queller, was a scholar who lacked the funds to attend the State Examinations and enlisted the support of a wealthy benefactor, to whom Zhonggui promised the hand of his sister in return.
