A pair of export 'Urne Mysterieuse' tea cups
Jiaqing
painted in coloured enamels and gilt with central roundels, the interiors in sepia tones with bands of fruiting vines -- 3 3/8in. (8.5cms) diam, (hairline rim cracks).

The central medallion is taken from engravings of 'L'Urne Mysterieuse' published after the execution of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in 1793, where the profiles of the King and Queen are outlined by the stem and foot of the urn, and those of their children are hidden in the branches of the weeping willow.
