His link-up play and understanding with John Mordue and Charlie Buchan was legendary. Born in Walker, Northumberland on 16 June 1889, his career began with Willingham Atheltic before joining Sunderland in 1909. Whilst with Sunderland he won the Division 1 Championship in 1913 and was a runner-up in the F.A.Cup the same season. He made two full International appearances for England and appeared for The Football League on three occasions.
