He was born in South Elmsall, Yorkshire on 8th October 1936 and his playing career began with Doncaster Schools before joining Sheffield Wednesday as a amateur in 1952, turning professional in 1953. He firmly established himself in the team towards the end of the 1957-58 season and became an automatic choice the following season, helping Sheffield Wednesday to the Division 2 Championship. An ever-present in the 1959-60 season, during which he maded in his first full International appearance for his Country. The early 1960s were a great period for Swan in footballing terms, with Sheffield Wednesday consistently finishing near the top of the table Division 1 and his International career was going from strength-to-strength. However, involvement in a betting scandle and subsequent conviction brought him a life time ban from the sport.
