PETER SWAN A centre-half Peter Swan was considered one of the best stoppers of his generation. He was born in South Elmsall, Yorkshire on 8th October 1936 and his playing career began with Doncaster Schools before joining Sheffield Wednesday as a amateur in 1952, turning professional in 1953. He firmly established himself in the team towards the end of the 1957-58 season and became an automatic choice the following season, helping Sheffield Wednesday to the Division 2 Championship. An ever-present in the 1959-60 season, during which he maded in his first full International appearance for his Country. The early 1960s were a great period for Swan in footballing terms, with Sheffield Wednesday consistently finishing near the top of the table Division 1 and his International career was going from strength-to-strength. However, involvement in a betting scandle and subsequent conviction brought him a life time ban from the sport.
