He was secreatry at Burnley before succeeding James West as manager of United in 1903. Along with the club's first great benefactor, J.H. Davies, he transformed United into one of the giants of the First Division. With United's financial status at last secure Mangnall proved himself a shrewd purchaser in the transfer market, bringing Harry Moger, Alex Bell, Dick Duckworth and the great Charlie Roberts. In 1907 when seven of Manchester City's stars were suspended due to an illegal payment scandal, Mangnall signed Sandy Turnbull, Herbert Burgess, Jimmy Bannister and the legendary Welsh Internationalist Billy Meredith and with this team in place United went on to win the First Division title twice (1907-08 and 1910-11) and the F.A.Cup in 1908-09.
