A fine winger with speed and scoring ability, he was born in Cleland, Lanarkshire on 3rd September 1914. His career began with Cleland St. Mary's and Stoneyburn Juniors before joining Celtic in August 1934 and played for the Parkhead club for twelve seasons. However, he was sidelined for three of those seasons due to a serious arm break sustained in April 1939 during a match against Arbroath (see lot 87). With Celtic he helped the club win the Scottish League Championship twice (1935-36 and 1937-38) and the Scottish Cup in 1936-37. In total he made 305 appearances, including Wartime matches for the club and scored 160 goals. In February 1946 he joined Manchester United for a transfer fee of £4,000 and two seasons later in 1948 he won a F.A.Cup winners medal with the club. He was described by Matt Busby as being one of the main reasons for the re-emergence of United as the most successful team in post-war football. After a brief spell with Falkirk he joined Derry City in 1954 for a then Irish League record of £1,500 and again won a winners medal in the 1954 Irish Cup final. In 1955 he moved on again to take up the post as player/manager for Cork Athletic, taking them to the F.A.I Cup final and thus setting a unique record as being the only player to play in four major domestic cup finals THE FOLLOWING LOTS (73-87) RELATE TO THE CAREER OF JAMES DELANEY
