An important pair of compasses supplied to Stanley by Hughes for the Trans African Expedition. The floating compass could not have been used on the Lady Alice. These are very personal mementos, and a compass is of crucial importance to an importance to an explorer. Stanley is known to have given a further compass to the Captain who carried his dispatches from Zanzibar back to London. Hughes provided the scientific instruments for this expedition
