THROUGH THE DARK CONTINENT
A group of six sepia toned contact prints from glass plates taken by Stanley on the Anglo-American trans-African expedition, 1874-1877, the prints 4 x 5 7/8in. (102 x 150mm.) mounted on card, five titled in ink by Stanley on the mounts 'Napoleon Channel, Victoria Nyanza', 'Rugedzi Channel', 'Rupon Falls', 'Mtesa and his chiefs' and 'Francis John Pococke'; with a sepia-toned photograph of the expedition at Admiralty House, Simonstown on the return journey, and a photograph of Dorothy Stanley's painting of King Mtesa (after Stanley's photograph) title in ink (by Dorothy) 'Mtesa King Uganda - painted by D. Stanley from faded photo./done under Stanley's guidance'.
An important group of photographs selected by Stanley for use in his published work. It appears that the original glass plates for these images survived because they were sent back to Zanzibar from Ujiji, and somewhere along the Congo the large plate camera that was being used was lost, and all the images of the expedition lost. The images are used in Through the Dark Continent..., London, 1878, I, p.145, 251 and facing p.189, 300 and 343 and II, facing p.474 (The first five engravings each credited 'From a photograph by the author'). None of the illustrations for the Congon section of the trip are credited to a photograph. (8)
