EMIN PASHA EXPEDITION EQUIPMENT
A green morocco medicine pocket-case, circa 1886, from Burroughs Wellcome & Co. (manufacturers), the front cover stamped in gilt 'H.M. Stanley', the flap with gilt metal catch, the interior containing twelve small tubular phials containing Wyeth (compressed) hypodermic tablets with cork stoppers, applied with an exhibition label no.53.
3¼ x 2½in. (83 x 63mm.); together with a green leather medicine pocket-case from Burroughs Wellcome & Co., the interior fitted with 10 leather loops containing 5 glass pill bottles with cork stoppers (4 un-opened with original calf skin caps intact), each with 'Tabloids' Brand contents identified on paper labels, and 3 'Zonas Court Plasters' manufactured by Johnson & Johnson in original paper wrappers, 8½ x 4in. (216 x 102mm.)
A silvered metal pea-whistle, the tubular body hemispherical aperture revealing a wooden pea, with swing loop, applied with a paper exhibition label numbered '34'.
A group of objects taken by Stanley on the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. The medicine kits from Burroughs Wellcome were especially tailored by the company to Stanley's needs, and the Company in turn used Stanley in their advertising. Henry Wellcome was a loyal family friend, from the 1880s. For the whistle, it was reported that at early light on each days march Stanley would blow the whistle to summon everyone to form the column. They would then set off, flag bearers in front with Stanley second in line, with gun bearers alongside. It would have been a formidable sight.
