A Victorian silver testimonial shield, of traditional form within tied reeded border, the shaped top applied with a circular bust portrait of H.M. Stanley within tied leaf and berry wreath on crossed American flags surmounted by a displayed eagle, above an engraved ribbon inscribed 'Presented to Henry M. Stanley, in recognition of his heroic achievements in the cause of humanity, science and civilisation, by Americans of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on the occasion of the American Testimonial Banquet given in London 30th May, 1890, the Hon. Jno. C. New presiding', the centre with an applied shield of the African Continent over the American flag, the upper corners set with two roundels with views, the left inscribed 'Stanley at the Battle of Amoaful , Ashanti Campaign, 1879', the right 'Stanley at Magdala, Abyssinian Campaign, 1868', both with supporters of military paraphenalia, the repoussé, chased and engraved ground with eight scenes from his life within shaped divides engraved 'Stanley finds and relieves Livingstone at Ujiji, 1871', 'Stanley discovers the southernmost source of the Nile, Suna, 1875', 'Stanley warned at Mwana Mamba by Tippu-Tib of the perils of the Congo, 1875', 'Stanley traces the Congo to the Sea, 1876/7', 'Stanley rescues Emin - Discovers the Mountains of the Moon, and traces the Semliki to its source', Stanley facing starvation in the Aruwhimi Forest - Guinea Fowl Incident, 1887', Stanley attacked by Aruwhini dwarfs - Stairs wounded, 1887', 'Stanley at Vivi, founding the Congo Free State - Natives give him the name "Bula Matari" 1879', with an elephant mask at the foot, between the engraved inscription 'Designed by Henry S.
