FREEDOM OF THE FISHMONGERS COMPANY, LONDON, JUNE 1890

A Victorian 18 carat gold and enamel rectangular Freedom Box, the front applied with an oval with Stanley's initials on translucent guilloché enamel ground, with two shields bearing the dates '1887' and '1890' separated by palm trees, the ends with elephant and lion's masks, the reverse engraved with a group of slaves and slavers, on stepped base, the front applied with the arms of the city of London, on four crowned stylized dolphin feet, the slightly domed cover applied with a finial of the enamelled arms of the Fishmongers' Company (lacking crest), the front applied with the rose-cut diamond-set word 'Africa', blue silk lining, the inside of the cover applied with a plaque engraved 'Presented by the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers of the City of London to Henry Morton Stanley, Esq., on his receiving the Honorary Freedom of the Company. 2nd June 1890', maker's mark of Isaac Pothecary, London, 1889, in the original dark blue velvet case

Enclosed in the box is the original manuscript and watercolour document on vellum granting 'the Honorary Freedom of the Mistery of Fishmongers of the City of London' dated 2nd June 1890, the calligraphy within a border of fish ornaments with the arms of the company and a view of African hunters.
