PAINTED PHOTOGRAPH FRAME
A large carte-de-visite portrait of Stanley, 145 x 110mm., by Elliott and Fry, Baker St., London. (Lightly spotted), enclosed in an Italian photograph frame, the front painted with an elaborate design of African Exploration, incorporating images of books, manuscripts and maps, signed A. Marchi, Florence, overall size 253 x 215mm.
Probably especially commissioned from a design by Stanley for Dorothy on their honeymoon tour of Europe in Autumn 1890. The design is very complicated incorportating specific texts from Stanley's and Livingstone books, information only recpgnisable by Stanley himself.
