STANLEY'S LECURE MAPS
Three wall maps used by Stanley for his public lectures, comprising: James Wyld's Africa, London, c.1890, lithographic wall map with wash and body colour mounted on cloth and rolled, (1420 x 1070)mm. (several clean tears to upper and lower edges, lacking lower wooden roller), annotated by Stanley; a Map of Equatorial Africa shewing Stations of the Missionary Societies, London & Liverpool, G. Philip & Son, c.1890, chromolithographic map printed on thick linen on 4 sheets joined, overall size 1070 x 2310mm.; Africa, London: Edward Stanford, 1895, 1520 x 1350mm., on wooden rollers, with Stanley's annotations.
An interesting group of wall maps used by Stanley on his lecture tours in the 1890s. The map by Wyld is particularly interesting, showing as it does Stanley's own annotations presenting the history of British interests in Africa. The George Philip map is in very fine condition and marks Stanley's route of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition and the principal missionary stations in the Congo (most initially set up by Stanley) and East Africa.
