A 39-STAR AMERICAN NATIONAL FLAG

A silk "Stars and Stripes", the arms of Delaware painted on both sides, lettered in gilt at lower right, 'DELAWARE'S TRIBUTE TO H.M. STANLEY', the stars arranged in horizonal rows of 6 or 7, upper left corner tied with red, white and blue striped ribbon (a few small holes at lower right, some light staining). [1889]. 24.1x 34in. (620 x 860mm)

A rare American flag acquired in 1890-91 during Stanley's coast-to-coast tour of the States. This flag would have been considered obsolete when the citizens of Delaware gave it in honour of Stanley. The American flag never officially constituted 39 stars but a few were produced in 1889, in expectation of the belief that the two Dakotas would be admitted to the union as one state, with others joining after 4th July. In the event, both Dakotas, Montana, Washington and Idaho entered the union together.
