PHILIP BEAVER (1766-1813)
African Memoranda: Relative to an attempt to establish a British settlement on the island of Bulama on the Western Coast of Africa in 1792. London: C. and R. Baldwin, 1805. 4° (271 x 215mm). Folding engraved frontispiece map, 2 engraved plans, each with explanatory leaf of text. (Some light spotting and occasional marginal soiling.) FIRST EDITION. The dedication is 'To that man, of whatever nation, who, with equal means, shall do more towards the introduction of civilization, by cultivation and commerce, to the inhabitants of the Western coast of Africa, than was effected by the enterprise of which the following sheets are descriptive ....' Below the inscription, Dorothy Stanley has written in pencil 'To Stanley -- That man!' signing and dating the inscription 1910.
