RICHARD FRANCIS BURTON (1821-1890)
Two Trips to Gorilla Land and the Cataracts of the Congo. London: Sampson Low. Marston, Low, and Searle, 1876. 2 volumes, 8° (221 x 138mm). 4 wood-engraved plates, 2 folding lithographic maps printed in blue and black, wood-engraved illustrations. (Occasional thumb-soiling.) Original green cloth blocked in black with gilt vignettes on upper cover and spine, gilt spine lettering, dark brown endpapers (covers slightly soiled, one corner bumped). Provenance: M.C. Carter Blake (ownership label on front pastedowns).
FIRST EDITION. With 2½pp. of pencil notes in an unidentified hand, possibly Carter Blake's, loosely inserted between pp. 154-155 of vol. II. The notes are evidently by someone familiar with the region, referring to the geography of the Gaboon river, the Western Ghats, 'the Ghats E & W,' the Ogobe, and 'the lofty Fernando Po (9350 ft.).' Also to diet and the necessity for alcohol as a medicine, ending with approval of Burton's 'Grand general view of the African Continent vol. II: 154.' Hosken p. 34; Penzer p. 94. (2)
