BIBLE in English -- The Holy Bible. Oxford: University Press and London: Henry Frowde, [n.d.]. 4° (163 x 115mm). Printed on India paper, 12 coloured maps at end. Original limp brown morocco with yapp edges, red and gilt page edges. ASSOCIATION COPY, the title inscribed 'To H.M. Stanley from W. Mackinnon/January 21 1887/Psalm 119 ver 105,' front blank with further inscription by Mackinnon at the same date, his address at Balinakill, Argyleshire, and reference to 'Ephesians 3. Ver 14 to end.' Sir William Mackinnon (1823-1893), shipowner, created the British India Steam Navigation Company, and was later the leading proponent of British commerical effort in central Africa. He patronised the Emin Relief Expedition, and 'possessed to a high degree ... the Victorians' happy facility for the simultaneous worship of God and Mammon' (Roger Jones The Rescue of Emin Pasha, 1972, p. 25). In his Autobiography (London, 1909, pp. 446-449), Stanley sadly records the death of 'my dear old friend' on June 22 1893, and gives a sympathetic account of the frustrations encountered by the Imperial British East Africa Company which Mackinnon had formed in September 1888.
