LIVINGSTONE COTTAGE HOSPITAL, DARTFORD, 1894
A silver and ivory presentation trowel, the shaped blade engraved 'Presented by the Chairman of the Committee to H.M. Stanley Esq. on the occasion of his placing the Memorial Stone of the Livingstone Cottage Hospital for Dartford and District. Dartford, 21st April 1894' within floral and foliate border, with foliate stem with tapering curved ivory handle, probably by Mappin & Webb, London, 1894, fitted into original velvet and silk-lined leather case, the cover stamped in gilt 'Mappin & Webb Silversmith to the Queen London & Sheffield'
13¼in. (335mm.) long.
In the 1890s Stanley found himself caught up with the rounds of London life. Dorothy organised his life efficiently, and stone-laying ceremonies such as this would have been part of the larger plan for him to stand as an M.P.
