'When Stanley became an MP in the general election of 1895, he found that he was already an anachronism. Parliament would listen to him, on the rare occasions when he had the chance to speak about Africa, with a polite respect. He made no impact and had to suffer the vexation of hearing long arguments about ''his continent'' from men who had never been there [...] He had been a great explorer, but he was not much of a politician' (Richard Hall Stanley (London: 1974), pp.347-8).
