A typescript for a proposed film about Stanley's life and the origin of the Belgian Congo, containing a 'Foreword', 'Note on the Film', 'Synopsis' and the dialogue and technical details of the 66 scenes of the film, occasional manuscript corrections or amendments, the text leaves interleaved with illustrations including tipped-in photographs of contemporary prints and photographs depicting the principal characters and locations, [circa 1938-1939], the leaves within a contemporary binder with fabric-covered boards.
THE TYPESCRIPT OF AN UNREALISED FILM ABOUT THE CONGO, BY THE LEADING BELGIAN CINEMATOGRAPHER HENRI STORCK AND THE SURREALIST WRITER CAMILLE GOEMANS. The film was never made -- due to the outbreak of World War II in 1939 -- but it was to have been directed by John Ford, with Spencer Tracy playing the role of Stanley. 'The object of the film is to acquaint the general public with a subject of which it is to a large extent ignorant -- the history of the origin of the Belgian Congo. The scenario tells of the efforts of Leopold II to realize the dream which he had already conceived in his youth of endowing Belgium with a colony, and shows how the explorer Stanley helped him in the matter' ('Foreword').
