WILLIAM HENRY HUDSON (1841-1922)
Birds of La Plata. London, Toronto and New York: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd. and E.P. Dutton & Co., 1920. 2 volumes and 1 envelope containing a second suite of plates, 4° (285 x 212mm.) Titles in brown and black. 22 coloured plates, present in two states bound in and mounted on unbound brown paper mounts with titles printed in green on covering tissue guards, all after H. Grönvold. Original red buckram-backed green cloth blocked in gilt, and portfolio of duplicate plates unbound (as issued) in original grey paper envelope.

FIRST EDITION, large paper edition limited to 200 copies signed by the author. The plates bound within the two volumes of text are laid down onto their mounts. The duplicate plates in the envelope are tipped onto their light brown paper mounts and protected by covering tissue guards which bear the title of each plate printed in green. This work is in effect a revised version of Argentine Ornithology by Hudson and Philip Sclater, originally published in London in 1888-9. In the introduction Hudson notes that he took the original work and removed all the material by Sclater: his intention was to produce a companion volume to his The Naturalist in La Plata. Both works recall Hudson's early life in Argentina. Anker 216; Nissen IVB 460; Payne A38c; Zimmer I, 312. (3)
