FIRST EDITION. 'According to Herman Melville, this is one of the best works on the whale fishery. In 1834 Bennett visited Pitcairn Island and gives an account of the islanders and details concerning the mutiny of the Bounty. Madeira, Tahiti, the Marquesas, and Hawaii were among other islands visited. Bennett was a scientist attached to this expedition. He was specifically assigned to observe the anatomy and habits of the southern whales, to determine the best way of conducting the sperm whale fishery industry, to investigate the islands of Polynesia, and to collect samples of natural history' (Hill).
