Just before setting off to discover the fate of Captain Scott, Lieutenant Evans writes to the former captain of the Morning: the letter sets out his plans for the voyage, settled after 'Having carefully studied the chart and the dates of different ships entering the pack'; the voyage is to include dredging -- 'our biologist is delighted at the dredging prospects ... my programme has even satisfied the energetic Pennell, who is a wonderful fellow', and referring to the 'unbounded hospitality of New Zealanders'.
Evans, having accompanied the last support group on Scott's last journey, had returned briefly to England in 1912 to raise more funds, before returning to New Zealand to take command of the Terra Nova, which reached Cape Evans on 17 January 1913, to discover the news of Scott's death. Evans's correspondent, Captain William Colbeck (1871-1930) had been commander of the Morning, the relief ship which reached the Discovery in 1903. Evans, then his Second Officer, greatly admired Colbeck's seamanship, and credited him with the success of the relief expedition.
