Details
SIR ERNEST HENRY SHACKLETON (1874-1922)

Autograph letter signed ('Ernest Shackleton') to 'Mr Rudd', Buenos Aires, 17 October 1914, on paper with printed heading of The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, one page, 4to (slightly yellowed).

A brief message of gratitude: 'Just on the eve of my final departure for the ice I want to thank you again for your great kindness to me and to tell you that I will try to make good and justify your faith in us'.
The expedition officially began when Shackleton joined the Endurance on 16 October. Another, slightly less expected, addition to the expedition at Buenos Aires was the stowaway, Percy Blackborrow.
