SIR JOHN FRANKLIN (1786-1847)
Autograph note signed ('John Franklin'), n.p., early 1819, 'To Catherine Anne Franklin this sixpence which had been taken out on his recent Expedition towards the North Pole in 1818 is presented by her affectionate Uncle', one leaf, approximately 90 x 115mm (worn, loss to lower left corner touching signature and affecting date); [with] a George III sixpence, 1816, attached by threads; framed and glazed; [with] an autograph letter signed to Sir John Richardson, 21 Bedford Place, 1 March 1845, 'I saw Mr Grant yesterday and made arrangements with him about the Pemmican -- also as to the supply of condensed fuel -- and of square Biscuits ... The ships are to be commissioned on Monday', one page, 8vo; [with] a transcript of another letter by Franklin.
Franklin's voyage to the Arctic in 1818 was the first British Arctic expedition: he embarked on 25 April with the ships Trent and Dorothea; they passed Spitzbergen on 26 May, but on their arrival at the pack ice on 30 July the Dorothea received severe damage, which eventually compelled them to return home; they arrived in England on 22 October. After the loss of Franklin's last expedition (1845-47), his old lieutenant Sir John Richardson was among the leaders of the relief efforts.
