Boston & New York: Houghton, Mifflin & Co., 1884. 2 volumes, 8° (234 x 146mm.) Steel-engraved portrait frontispiece to vol.I, tinted lithographic frontispiece to vol.II, numerous wood-engraved plates and illustrations, 4 lithographic maps (2 folding (one in pocket at end of vol.I), 2 double-page). (Frontispiece to vol.II loosely inserted, 1 folding map split into three sections.) Original cloth (lightly soiled, front inner hinge of vol.II split and free endpaper detached.) Provenance: Ella H. Smith (signature). First edition. The 'Jeanette' sailed from San Francisco in July 1879, was beset in the ice for 19 months, was crushed, and finally sank 12 June 1881. 33 men struck out for land, and 25 reached the Lena delta. De Long and eleven others died there before they were rescued. Arctic Bibliography 3839.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. 2 volumes, 8° (234 x 155mm.) First edition. An expedition during the First International Polar Year, based on the east coast of Ellesmere Island, explored the north coast of Greenland, the interior and west coast of Grinnell Land. The relief ships failed to reach them and after a walk out of the Hall basin area only seven members of the expedition survived to be rescued at Cape Sabine, Smith Sound. Arctic Bibliography 6118.
