PROVENANCE:
Alexander Hepburne Macklin (1889-1967), and thence by descent to the present owners.
Macklin's journal records the triumphant progress of Shackleton and his men from their arrival of the Yelcho in Punta Arenas on Sunday 3 September. After two weeks in Punta Arenas they sailed on the Yelcho to Valparaiso on 18 September, and from there they travelled to Santiago and across the Andes to Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Shackleton and Worsley left Buenos Aires for Valparaiso on 8 October bound for Hobart to relieve the Ross Sea Party. Macklin sailed for England on 10 October.
The present lot recalls the festivities which greeted the expedition on its trail through South America, which were devised by Shackleton in part as a means to campaign for the British cause in Chile, and partly to celebrate their survival and to thank parties who helped with the various relief voyages. The menus offered a surfeit of extravagant fare after a year of penguin, seal and biscuit. (12)
