Lot Essay

Bligh's Director dismasted the Dutch Admiral de Winter's flagship Vrijheid at the Battle of Camperdown on 11 October 1797. He commissioned three paintings by Samuel Owen to depict the action, proudly displayed his Camperdown medal and kept a trophy, the canton to the Dutch Admiral's flag. He later named a port in New South Wales after the action.
