NOVARA EXPEDITION, 1857-1859
[Karl SCHERZER and others]. Reise der Oesterrichischen Fregatte Novarra um die Erde, in den Jahren 1857, 1858, 1859 unter den Befehlen des Commodore B.von Wüllerstorf-Urbair. Vienna: 1861-1875. 21 volumes in 15 (i.e. account of the voyage: 3 vols, 8° [252 x 172mm.], scientific reports: 18 volumes in 12 vols, large 4° [294 x 235mm.]). About 450 plates, maps, charts and illustrations (mostly lithographs, but including 21 handcoloured lithographs of butterflies and 11 mounted photographs). (Lacking most volume titles, some leaves loosely inserted.) Various original, contemporary and later bindings (some sections bound out of order).
An apparently complete set of the scientific reports from the 'last great scientific expedition of the nineteenth century' (Borba de Moraes). The erratic way in which the present set has been bound, allied with a slightly inaccurate collation from Borba de Moraes make a final determination of the completeness of this set unfeasible. Borba de Moraes II, pp.619-621; Hill II, p.513.
[With:]
Karl SCHERZER. Narrative of the Circumnavigation of the Globe by the Austrian Frigate Novara. London: Saunders, Otley and Co., 1861-1863. 3 vols., 8° (252 x 162mm.). Titles in red and black, 24 publishers' advertisements. 1 plate, 8 tinted maps (1 folding), 2 facsimiles of letters, numerous illustrations and decorations. (Neat repair to folding map, some spotting). Original green cloth, blocked in gilt and blind (slightly bumped). Provenance: Edward Thomas & Diana Coke (joint armorial bookplate).
First edition in English. Borba de Moraes II,p.621; Hill II p.565; Sabin 77620. Due to the difficulties of collating the first title, this lot is sold not subject to return. (18)
