The Beatles' shows in Adelaide on the 12th and 13th of June were their first concerts in Australia. Jimmy Nicol replaced Ringo Starr who was ill with tonsilitis, for the first part of the Beatles' tour of Scandinavia, Holland, the Far East, Australia and New Zealand. He returned to England shortly after the Adelaide shows, when Ringo rejoined the group in Melbourne, Australia. Apparently during the tour when any of the Beatles asked Nicol how he was coping ...if he was liking it and was he managing okay, all he ever replied was "It's Getting Better". The others teased him about this, as it was the only comment they could get out of him it became a joke phrase. Three years later in 1967, Nicol's comment inspired Paul to write the song It's Getting Better on the Sgt. Pepper's album. As payment for replacing Ringo, Nicol received £500 and a gold watch as a jokey retirement present inscribed From The Beatles and Brian Epstein to Jimmy - with appreciation and gratitude. Nicol said of his Beatles' experience ..The boys were very kind but I felt like an intruder. They accepted me but you can't just go into a group like that - they have their own atmosphere, their own sense of humour. It's a little clique and outsiders just can't break in...
