A set of four Scottish George III elm hall chairs
Each with a pierced arched waisted back, centred by a bead bordered oval with an armorial with initials RC enclosed by a belt with the motto transfigam, with a solid recessed roundel bowed seat on fret-carved front and back supports with dual splayed feet, old repairs (4)

Purchased in the 1930's from the executors of the late Ronald Colt

Lot Essay

The design of the backs is inspired by those illustrated in Thomas Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director, 3rd edition, 1762, pls XVII and XVIII. Chairs with similar backs have been sold at Christie's King Street, 21 April 1994, lot 250 and in these rooms, Property Removed from the Old Vicarage, West Malling, Kent, 23 September 1998, lot 509.
