Lot Essay

Helen Rose Ogilvy, 5th daughter of Thomas Ogilvy of Corrimony, Invernesshire, became the second wife of the banker Louis Huth at the age of 17. He was a keen patron of the arts and commissioned both George Frederick Watts and James Abbott McNeil Whistler to paint portraits of his wife. The Huth's built a neo-gothic house at Possingworth and it was from here that on 9th February 1878 the first in this series of meticulous watercolours was begun, marking the start of a methodical hobby that lasted for over twenty-five years.
