Major General Stringer Lawrence commanded the East India Company in 1748 and with Robert Clive, delivered India to British rule in 1757. A national hero who entered the army in 1727, he fought at Gibraltar early in his career, and served in Flanders and in the Jacobite rising of 1745. Upon his death, Stringer Lawrence was commemorated by the East India Company with a monument at Westminster Abbey.
