"Too much of ought is good for nought", in other words "Enjoy, but drink in moderation". This old Dutch proverb inspired this composition by David Teniers, whose bright palette is entirely in keeping with the witty character of the piece. One of the foremost Flemish painters of the seventeenth century, Teniers was famous for his representation of low-life scenes in festive settings. This unusual piece is one of only a handful by the artist that focuses on the aftermath of merry binges and their effects on the body.

In a private communication with the father of the present owners, dated 23 July 1980, Dr. Margret Klinge notes that this is a late work by the artist.
