Lot Essay

This rare and early powder horn shown here depicts various scenes including a map with views of New York, Staten Island, Albany, Schenectady and Oswego. The horn also depicts the Forts Williams, Oswego and Ontario, dating the horn around 1755-56, the only time these three forts coexisted. Also inscribed on the horn is a depiction of Manhattan with a fortified wall presumably what is now Wall Street and a fort behind.
