Lot Essay

The present composition bears witness to the inventiveness displayed in Picasso's printmaking. A simple black and white lithographic drawing was transformed into an incredibly complex colour composition through nine different stages. The present composition is the fourth stage in this process. As with other series Picasso printed five impressions of each stage, which were not for publication. Such is Picasso's genius that each intermediate composition is an independent work of art in its own right.
